Fun experience: Discovering frozen animals

An interactive activity to discover the states of matter

Preparation: choosing and freezing the animals

We started by involving the children in the preparation of the activity. They chose small plastic animals that they carefully placed in trays filled with water. These trays were then put in the freezer to transform the liquid water into ice, thus preparing the ground for a sensory discovery.

Exploration: Arousing children’s curiosity

The next day, it was time for exploration! We transferred the small ice blocks into a large container. Equipped with small wooden hammers, the children began to break the ice to free the animals. With each discovery, the cries of enthusiasm echoed in the room, and they even imitated the noises of the animals found!

Sensory learning at every stage

This experiment allowed the children to observe and touch water in its solid (ice) and liquid (melted water) forms. For the little ones, it was a rich sensory experience where they explored the temperature, texture and changes in state of water.

Photo suggestion: Insert a photo here of a child watching the ice melt or touching the water.

Educational reflections: learning by manipulating

Skills stimulated

  • Scientific observation: The children observed the transformations of water and understood the cause and effect relationship.

  • Enriched language: By describing what they saw and felt, children strengthened their vocabulary.

  • Motor coordination: Using the small hammers developed their fine motor skills.

A link with STEAM pedagogy
