Educational Activities: Shapes, Colors and Fun Mathematics

The Awakening of the Senses and Logic: A Unified Pedagogy

At Les Mousquetaires daycare center, located in Leudelange, Luxembourg, we believe in integrated learning: each activity simultaneously stimulates multiple skills. This week, our little ones participated in a workshop combining visual discrimination and playful mathematics, two pillars of our educational program.

Combined Workshop: Sorting, Shapes and First Steps in Mathematics

“Observe, classify, count” : these are the key steps of this workshop designed to awaken the curiosity of children (1 to 4 years old) while strengthening their cognitive and language skills.

1. Visual Discrimination and Sorting of Objects

The children explored geometric shapes (circles, squares, triangles) and everyday objects (balls, cubes, miniature windows) to:

  • Distinguish similarities and differences : sort by color, size or shape.

  • Develop trilingual vocabulary : “This triangle is yellow!” (in French, Luxembourgish and English).

  • Boost concentration : spot visual details and memorize patterns.

2. Introduction to Mathematics through Play

In a second step, these same objects served as support for:

  • Compare and classify : differentiate large/small , heavy/light using homemade scales.

  • Discover numbers : count colored blocks while singing trilingual nursery rhymes.

  • Experiment with spatial logic : assemble pieces according to models to create structures.

Educational Objectives :

  • Strengthen fine motor skills and hand-eye coordination .

  • Lay the foundations of mathematical operations (simplified addition/subtraction).

  • Encourage collaboration through group games.

Why Combine These Activities?

Combining visual discrimination and mathematics allows children to see concrete connections between what they observe and what they learn. For example, sorting red cubes prepares them for counting, and comparing sizes introduces the concept of measurement. This multidisciplinary approach is at the heart of our philosophy.STEAM(Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, Mathematics). »

Conclusion: A Global Preparation for the Future

At Les Mousquetaires Daycare, every activity takes place within a multilingual and holistic framework, aligned with Luxembourgish educational standards. By combining sensory play, language, and logic, we prepare children to approach preschool with confidence and creativity.
