Stimulating scientific curiosity in toddlers
At Crèche Les Mousquetaires daycare, located just a stone’s throw from the forest and parks of Leudelange, Luxembourg, every day is an opportunity for learning and discovery. Recently, our little explorers took part in a fun and educational activity around the concepts of weight and balance – a great introduction to science, adapted to their young age.
A homemade scale for learning while having fun
With simple everyday materials – hangers, string, cups – we made a small scale. The children were directly involved in the creation of this tool, assembling the different elements while developing their fine motor skills and creativity.
Once the scale was ready, the exploration began. The children handled a variety of objects – feather, cotton, cube, sponge, fruit – of different weights. They observed how the scale tilted more or less depending on the weight of the objects placed on each side.
Discover the laws of balance while having fun
This activity was not only fun, but also rich in learning:
Understanding the concept of weight : Children were able to compare different objects and realize that some were lighter or heavier than others.
Develop their logic and reasoning : By observing the results, they made links between action and consequence.
Strengthen their vocabulary : Children learned new words to describe objects and their characteristics.
A STEAM approach at the Les Mousquetaires nursery
This activity perfectly illustrates our commitment to STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, Mathematics) pedagogy, which is an integral part of our educational program. By stimulating children's natural curiosity and allowing them to learn through manipulation and exploration, we lay the foundation for harmonious development and future essential skills.
