Arcimboldo-inspired art activity at the Les Mousquetaires nursery

At the Les Mousquetaires nursery in Leudelange, our little artists aged 2 to 4 explored an artistic activity that was as original as it was delicious! Inspired by the Italian artist Arcimboldo, the children transformed their own portrait into a face made of fruits and vegetables… to the great pleasure of their eyes (and their vocabulary!).

A sensory, artistic, and multilingual activity

As part of our interdisciplinary learning program, we introduced the children to Giuseppe Arcimboldo's famous portraits, created using food, flowers, and everyday objects. This sparked a wonderful discussion:

"What do you see?", "Is that a real face?", "What is it made of?"

Each child then received a large printed photo of their face, as well as cut-out images of fruits and vegetables: tomatoes, kiwis, cucumbers, strawberries, lettuce… Their mission? To create a new face by sticking these elements wherever they wish: on the hair, cheeks, nose or mouth!

Educational objectives of the activity:

  • Enriching children's vocabulary in French, Luxembourgish and English

  • Promoting free artistic expression from a very young age

  • Introducing children to famous artists in a fun way

  • Working on self-image and strengthening self-esteem

  • Raising awareness about healthy eating through play

Imagination takes center stage at the Leudelange daycare center

The children experimented, glued, invented… Some made funny faces, others colorful or completely surreal! This sensory and creative activity allowed them to concentrate while developing their fine motor skills and cultural curiosity.

By using pictures of food, they naturally learned new words through interactions with adults and their peers, in a strong and engaging visual context.

And then? A mini exhibition of vibrant portraits!

The children's artwork will be displayed at the nursery, and perhaps even included in a personalized artist's sketchbook for each child. A wonderful way to encourage their creativity and boost their self-esteem.
